Lionni, Leo Frederick. PICTURE BOOK. Random House, 1967 (Step Into Reading reprint 2014). $3.99. Content: G.
Frederick the field mouse is too busy daydreaming to help collect food for the coming winter. Months later, when supplies run low and the cold seeps into the nest, will Frederick finally have something to contribute?
I believe strongly in the power of words, and the world needs more daydreamers and poets. However, these mice are starving and freezing because Frederick did not do his part. No matter how lovely Frederick's verses may be, if he had helped his friends prepare for winter instead of daydreaming -- or even while daydreaming -- none of them would be in this dire predicament and his poetry would be a fun way to entertain everyone throughout the long winter instead of a method for staving off hunger. Beyond the lack of practicality, however, this is a cute book with adorable illustrations and lovely imagery, and perhaps it could spark an interesting discussion about people's roles in society.
