Armand, Glenda Love Twelve Miles Long, illustrated by Colin Bootman PICTURE BOOK . Lee & Low Books, Inc., 2011. $17.95. Content: G.
Frederick’s mother lives on a different plantation than he does, but whenever she can she makes the long journey and comes to visit. Twelve long miles full of forgetting and praying and sining and loving. As his momma recounts each mile, Frederick knows that it is closer to the time when she must leave him.
While the author says this is based on the life of Frederick Douglass, it really doesn’t matter, because it shows the love between mother and child under very heart-breaking circumstances. This is a book about the love between mother and child and is set upon the backdrop of slavery. The small details reveal the life of a slave, but it is the love that means much more.
