Egan, Tim. Dodsworth in Rome. Houghton Mifflin, 2011. $14.99. EARLY READER.
Dodsworth and his duck continue to tour the world (Dodsworth in New York, 2007, Dodsworth in Paris, 2008, Dodsworth in London, 2009) and stop in Rome, Italy. They take a scooter to see the sights. They eat Italian ice cream. They toss coins into the Trevi Fountain. Dodsworth loses his suitcase with all of their money in it at a flea market where duck enters a pizza tossing contest. With no money and nowhere to go they sleep on the Spanish Steps. Their luck changes when the duck finds some money and someone returns their suitcase. Dodsworth and his duck are a delightfully different duo, Dodsworth follows the rules and the duck makes his own.
In addition to a charming story, this little book does an excellent job of introducing children to Rome’s most famous sites with illustrations that have personality and warmth.
