Gratton, Tessa Blood Magic, 416 pgs. Random House Books for Young Readers, 2011. $11.98. (Language-G, Violence-PG; Sexual Content-PG13.)
After their parents die in a murder-suicide, Silla and her brother Reese are left with a legacy of confusion, grief, and magic -a spellbook to be exact. The siblings, and a new neighbor Nicholas, soon discover that this magic requires a price, blood. As they began to experiment with this blood magic, they realize that there may be more to their parent’s death than meets the eye, and that killer isn’t quite through yet.
This book was absolutely great! It was told from a variety of distinct perspectives, which flowed nicely, and added much to the story. The plot was creative, interesting, and multifaceted. The concept felt fresh and new –despite the homogenized and popular theme of magic-using teenagers. There are some ‘typical’ teen behaviors mentioned – drinking/sex, but nothing in gory detail and no swearing. I would highly recommend this book –it’s both dark and intriguing. Best book I have read in this genre!
