Bennett, Cherie and Gottesfeld, Jeff Amen, L.A., 272 pgs. Ember, 2011. $8.99. (Language-PG, Violence-G; Sexual Content-PG13.)
When Natalie’s mom becomes the new pastor for The Church of Beverly Hills, they whole family makes a drastic change –from small town life to a mansion in Los Angeles. Natalie has been brought up with a foundation of values, but when new friends show her a glamorous lifestyle there is more than temptation to push those boundaries.
This book defy all of my preconceived notions. It was value laden without being preachy. It was trendy without being over the top. It had religion but it was just subtle to be a perfect addition. The characters were true to themselves without being fake. The main character is one of the most authentic teen voices I have read to date, in any book. I think teens will enjoy Natalie’s perspective, the pop culture references, and the ritzy setting. Typical teen issues such as drinking and sex are discussed in context and school library appropriate. This book is the start of a series, and I look forward to future reading.
