Schroeder, Lisa The Day Before, 320 pgs. Simon Pulse, 2011. $11.46. (Language-G, Violence-G; Sexual Content-G.)
Told entirely in verse, this story is about a girl named Amber, on the precipice of a life altering change. So Amber decides to spend one entire day to herself –not thinking of what is to come, but enjoying the day. Coincidently she bumps into a hot guy names Cade, who is doing the same thing. They spend the day together –living in the here and now.
Wow, distilling the plot like that makes it sound really boring, when in fact this was an incredibly interesting read. The back plot is revealed slowly and piecemeal, which creates curiosity. While the portions happening now, reveal some deep and insightful truths. Initially, I was dreading reading this book, since it is presented in verse, but the partial poetry of it was part of what made it so creative and it quickly became addictive. I think teen readers will relate to the feelings and thoughts of Amber, enjoy the artistry of the presentation, and find themselves being drawn to the magic of losing oneself in the moment. (What teen couldn’t relate to living in the now!)
