Le, Minh Drawn Together, illustrated by Dan Santat. PICTURE
BOOK. Disney Hyperion, 2018. $18. 9781484767603.
A young boy is left with his grandfather for the afternoon. The
two do not even speak the same language--his grandfather speaks Thai to the
boy's English--and the boy is quickly ready to give up and resort to his usual
silence. But then he pulls out a sketchpad, and his grandfather sees a way to
connect through their art. Together the boy and his grandfather forge a
connection through their shared language--and combined artwork--that is truly
beautiful to see.
The artwork in this story is absolutely beautiful. There are
multiple styles layered together and art fans of any age will appreciate the
illustrations here. The text is also pretty limited--with the pictures telling
the story for much of the tale--which is a perfect compliment to the story
being told. Overall I think this is a story that will appeal to adults and
older readers, but the illustrations will be loved and appreciated by all ages.
Art teachers will want their own copies.
