Sparks by Ian Boothby – ADVISABLE

Boothby, Ian Sparks, illustrated by Nina Masumoto.  192 pages.  GRAPHIC NOVEL. Scholastic, 2018.  $25.

This is the story of two cats, August and Charlie, who escaped from a secret alien laboratory and are now living on their own. They stole technology and have created a super hero robot dog, which they ride in and control, in order to save people from various disasters. But the aliens want them back, need them –in order for their animal mind control device to work. The duo will have to face overwhelming odds (and their terror from being in the lab) if they are going to save the world.

This was a great graphic novel with a lot of heart! The author created quite a few distinct characters with pasts, fears, personalities, and things to overcome. The plot was creative and interesting. I think 2-5 graders will completely enjoy this graphic novel. The artwork was cartoony and fun.
