Square lives in a
cave and his job is to move square rocks up the mountainside and stack them at
the top. One day when Circle comes by,
she praises Square for being a brilliant sculpture and asks Square to make a
sculpture of her. Square works all
night, but can’t cut the bolder into a circle, but when Circle returns she sees
all the chipped off pieces that fell in the form of a circle and she thinks
Square is a genius. The last page reads,
“But was he really?”
This book makes the
reader ask what it means to be an artist-does it take someone else telling you
that you are? The illustrations are
different shades of blacks, browns and light blue and are simple but still add
to the telling of the story. I think
younger readers might leave this story confused and Square seems like a sad character.
