Lily’s Mountain by Hannah Modern - OPTIONAL

Moderow, Hannah Lily’s Mountain, 182 pages.  Houghton Mifflin, 2018.  $17.

Content: G (1 swear).

Lily, 12, Sophie, 18, and their mother have received the worst news – their father has disappeared into a suddenly appearing crevasse while descending from his favorite mountain, Denali, in Alaska.  Lily refuses to believe that her capable father would allow such a thing to happen, so she convinces Sophie to go with her to Denali to look for him themselves, since no one else will.  While they have some skills, the sisters are not really prepared for what they will face on the mountain.

Watching the under prepared sisters head out into the wilderness to look for their outdoorsman father is a painful series of potentially fateful missteps.   Lily and Sophie’s journey to find solace for their grief is at least short-lived.  While the important plot is girl vs self, the girl vs nature parts save this from being maudlin.
