Levy, Debbie Soldier Song: a true story of the Civil War,
illustrated by Gilbert Ford. NON-FICTION
PICTURE BOOK. Disney, 2017. $19.
During the Battle of Fredericksburg the two sides would
entertain themselves in the evening with song and music. Often they would compete with each other,
changing the words to beloved favorites to irk the enemy. One night, however, someone started singing
Home Sweet Home by John Howard Payne, and for that time, the two camps were
united in their yearning for the comforts of home.
Levy populates her book with quotes from diaries and
journals of the time period, weaving together an untold story of brotherhood
during the Civil War. Ford’s
illustrations fit the mood of the book perfectly. I can’t wait to share this with my teachers.
