Levy, Debbie, ill. by
Gilbert Ford. Soldier Song; True Story of
the Civil War. Disney Hyperion, 2017. INFORMATION.
Since the dawn of time, song has been used to boost spirits,
provide morale, and ensure a feeling of purpose. During the civil war, after
the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Union was feeling defeated. The Confederates
were feeling victorious. Both pushed onward with song. Today we still have the
legacy of these songs.
This book does a great job of illustrating a story for
readers through beautiful artwork and simple text. With primary sources
incorporated into the text as well as the words and music to the songs, this is
a must-have for any history teacher or library’s collection. Included are a
timeline, a bibliography, and quotation sources to help incorporate into common
core standards.
