Fleming, Candace
Giant Squid Illustrated by Eric
Rohmann PICTURE BOOK Neal Porter Book, 2016 (Roaring Brook
Press). $18.99 Content: G.
This book explains what is known of the giant squid. The information is presented with a lot of
questions and the reader is often told that there isn’t a lot known about the
giant squid. What is known is that they
squeeze their prey to death, have big eyes and use their 8 tentacles to catch
food. Little squid are born from an egg
and start out at two inches long.
This
book feels mysterious and paints the squid as scary using words like a “terrifying
tongue” and it “rips apart” its food.
The most informative and interesting part of the book is the back page
spread that has a diagram of a squid and points out it’s body parts and
functions. The illustrations are dark and
I kept wanting to see more. I had a
hard time with the monstrous description of the squid—just because we don’t
know about something doesn’t make it a monster. Would I want to come across one of these in the ocean? No. I left with more questions than I started with.
