Benny is a 4th grader
who thinks his life is over. Over the
summer his best friend moved away, he can’t ride a bike, his dad has an
accident, and his teacher isn’t what everyone tells his Mr. Norris would
be. The Principal gives the students a
challenge to do something nice for someone.
Benny’s mother has always told him, “When bad things happen you should
focus on helping others.” Benny takes the challenge and immediately begins to
be discouraged. Benny is constantly
helping others; his brother George is autistic and Benny is his protector.
Benny feels that his dad’s accident was his fault so he is struggling to
overcome those feelings. Benny’s dad
suffers another episode. This time he just
knows his dad will die, but instead he regains his health. The entire family spends the day together and
Benny learns to ride his bike. The
family realizes that good things happen if you stick together.
