Remy and Lulu by Kevin Hawkes - ADVISABLE

Hawkes, Kevin Remy and Lulu, PICTURE BOOK. Knopf, 2014. $17.99. Content: G. Remy has poor eyesight, but he loves to paint so he paints from his heart. He meets a dog named Lulu and they become fast friends. Together they visit many homes to paint portraits. What Remy can’t see is that Lulu adds her own paintings of the pets in the home while Remy paints his subjects. Lulu’s art is a hit, but everyone thinks it’s Remy’s work.  When Remy receives better eyeglasses as a gift, he finally sees what everyone else is so excited about and becomes too dejected to paint until Lulu helps him find his passion again. This is a sweet story about friendship and expressing yourself from within.  I wasn’t as impressed with the illustrations as I would have hoped, but the book flows very well and has themes that I think even younger students will relate to.
