Hung Up by Kristen Tracy - OPTIONAL

Tracy, Kristen  Hung Up, 282 pgs.  Simon Pulse, 2014.  $17.99  Content: Language: PG-13 (35 swears); Mature Content: PG-13 (uses the word “masturbation”); Violence: PG-13 (brother plays Russian roulette in an attempted suicide).

Lucy calls James and leaves multiple voice messages but has the wrong number.  James finally calls Lucy back to let her know that she needs to stop calling him and they spark up a conversation and become friends.  Over three months they talk to each other about everything—homework, ex-boyfriend/girlfriends and the heavy issues of their family life.  When it comes time to meet each other, Lucy doesn’t know what to do.

This entire story is told in phone conversations and messages.  They cover serious issues-such as teen drinking and losing family members.  The cover looks like a sweet silly romance, but it actually has depth.  It was a fast read and the characters had good banter between each other.

HS-OPTIONAL.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
