Haven by Mary Lindsey - OPTIONAL

Lindsey, Mary Haven, 371 pages. Entangled Teen, 2017. $18. Content: Language: R (100+ swears; 25 “f”); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: R.

Rain lives on the streets with his drug addicted mother, but when she overdoses and dies Rain is sent to live with the aunt he never knew he had. When Rain arrives in the small Texas town to live with his aunt Ruby, he quickly falls for Freddie, the tough sassy girl in his class.  Rain also realizes that there is something off about this town and there is a secret everyone is trying to keep from him, a secret that Freddie seems to be the focus of.

This is an interesting werewolf mystery with a quick story line and creepy characters.  As much as I liked Rain, the characters aren’t very well developed, especially their relationships. The content includes off page sex, drug overdose, gruesome torture and death.  The swearing is also distracting as the author tries to use it as a way to make the characters seem tough and fearless, but it just comes across as trashy.

HS – OPTIONAL.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
