Felix, Rebecca Hurricane Harvey: Disaster in Texas andBeyond, 32 pages. NON-FICTION. Millbrook
(Lerner), 2018. $20
This book gives an account of Hurricane Harvey and its main
impact on Texas. It also delves into facts about hurricanes/tropical cyclones/tropical
storms, the rescue effort, and the process of rebuilding. Accompanied by a
plethora of photographs.
I was very interested to read this book and often have students asking for books about hurricanes and other wild weather. But this one was disappointing. There weren’t really any images of the storm itself (maybe there aren’t any) and if that it the case, they could have had some artist re-creations done –because this is the part that students are most interested in. The writing feels like it meanders all over the place and is overly long because of it =boring. (Which isn’t great since this is a very interesting topic). Best read by 4th grade and up.
