This book is a compilation of poems from different centuries
about the people who crossed the sea. There are poems about Columbus’s journey,
the Middle Passage, the Irish Potato Famine, the Titanic, and recent events
with the Mediterranean refugee crisis. There are beautiful and powerful
illustrations to match the emotions of the poetry. At the end of the book there
is also notes about the historical context for all the poems and biographies of
all the poets.
I loved all of these poems and how the book was designed. I
enjoyed going through each century to learn about a new journey someone took
across the ocean. The illustrations combined with the text were very powerful
and thought provoking. It was also engaging to read so many different poets and
their styles. The historical context in the back was extremely helpful and
enlightening to gather more perspective about the poems.
