McCartney, Tania A Canadian Year: Twelve Months in the Life of Canada's Kids, illustrated by Tina Snerling. NONFICTION. PICTURE BOOK. Exisle Publishing, 2017. $18. 9781925335439
Five multicultural Canadian kids take readers on a journey through their country, showing some activities and holidays based on the months and seasons. Other information includes typical Canadian meals and some of the animals the children may see.
I love the idea of this book. It's interesting to learn about some of the different cultures within Canada, and to get an idea of what life might be like there. Unfortunately, the pages seem messy and chaotic, with bits of text and illustrations placed seemingly-randomly on each spread. In addition, many of the holiday names and other details are simply dropped in with no explanation, which means the book cannot be read without ready access to either Google or a set of encyclopedias. On a more minor note, a bald eagle is labeled as a golden, which makes me question the accuracy of the rest of the book as well.
