My Best Friend is a Goldfish by Mark Lee - OPTIONAL

Lee, Mark My Best Friend is a Goldfish, illustrated by Chris Jevons.  PICTURE BOOK Carolrhoda Books (Lerner), 2018. $18. 9781512426014

A little boy tries to define what it is to be a best friend.  At first the little boy and his friend like to play make believe together, but when they have a disagreement, the little boy decides his different pets make better best friends.  As he goes through the ways that he and his pet friends like the same things, he finds that every relationship has its differences.  So the little boy goes back to his best friend and they start playing together again.

The illustrations in this book are bright and attractive.  The moral that our friends have similarities that make us love playing with them but also that our friends have differences that we need to appreciate is an important message.  My only issue is that sometimes the text is choppy and incomplete so the reader has to put the moral of the story together on their own.
