Kheiriyeh, Rashin Saffron Ice Cream. PICTURE BOOK.
Arthur A. Levine (Scholastic), 2018.
$18. 9781338150520.
Rashin is on her first trip to an American beach with her
family. She remembers what it was like
to go to the beach in her home country of Iran, with its separate beaches for men
and women and the sweet taste of saffron ice cream. Brooklyn doesn’t have saffron ice cream, but
it does have saffron chocolate crunch. And
everybody is on the beach together, including a new friend.
What perfect timing for a book that shows us all life in a
different culture – different, but just as fun and valid. Kheriyeh’s illustrations are as exuberant as
the play on the beach. I would use this
in any unit about the Middle East, about summer around the world, or just for
fun.
Pre-K, EL (K-3) – ESSENTIAL.

Nice review, but you may want to correct for the fact that Rashin tries and enjoys chocolate crunch ice cream at the beach, not saffron crunch.
Thank you - for catching that. I've changed it.
