Liukas, Linda Hello Ruby: Journey inside the Computer, 96
pages. NON-FICTION. Feiwel (MacMillan),
2017. $17.
This book starts with the story of Ruby, who goes to use her
dads computer and discovers that something is wrong with it. She is able to
shrink down and journey with the mouse to see what’s going on. She tours the workings of the computer and makes discoveries about how it works. The next part of the
book is a series of games and activities, mostly about computer parts and how
computers function but there are also a few basic coding activities. Bright
illustrations throughout.
I get the point of the this book –to make learning about
computers more like a story (showing) but it just ends up being more confusing
than spelling it out (telling). But it was just overload. This book is stuffed with SO much technical information, which is better understood by an upper elementary but presented for much younger readers
–giving it a content-audience mismatch. I wouldn’t add this book to my library.
