Potter, Alicia. Jubilee! One Man's Big, Bold, and Very, Very Loud Celebration of Peace, illustrated by Matt Tavares. PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick Press, 2014. Content: G.
While many people have since forgotten him, Patrick S. Gilmore once played an important role in American music by, among other things, organizing a peace jubilee to celebrate the end of the Civil War. Many people thought his idea of a record-breaking celebration was too big and too bold to be possible, but Gilmore defied the odds; his marvelous event drew thousands of participants and viewers, and earned praise from people around the world.
Not only is this book informative, but it's also inspiring, and even the endnotes are interesting. The illustrations work very well with the text, capturing everything from the grandeur of the event to the looks on individual participants' faces. This would be a nice addition to a music class, or a good wrap-up for a unit on the Civil War. Because of the length, vocabulary, and background information required, it would likely work better for older elementary school students than for younger ones.
