Canemaker, John The Art and Flair of Mary Blair, 106 p. NONFICTION. Disney Editions, 2014. $45. Mature Content: PG-13 (one nude painting on the final page).
Mary Blair was the lone female artist , or imaginer, in the early days of Disney. While her work was very avant garde and didn’t always make the cut, she still had a major influence on many classic Disney projects: Small World, Alice, Cinderella, Peter Pan, are just a few iconic projects that she influenced. The book is extremely interesting to read and is filled with page after page of Blair’s beautiful paintings. What I don’t understand is the inclusion of a single nude painting right at the end of the book. I could actually understand having more nudes in the book, if nudes were something that Blair did regularly for her private works, but the inclusion of a single nude on the final page is jarring in the context of a book that otherwise contains paintings that are geared towards children.
