Ross, Catherine Sheldrick Shapes in Math, Science, and Nature, illustrated by Bill Slavin, 191 p. Kids Can Press, 2014. $25. Content: G.
The first sentence in this book says, “If you stand with your arms stretched out, you are about as tall and as wide as a square.” What? Really? That makes no sense. So, I turned this book over to one of our math teachers to see if it gets any more logical, interesting, or useful as you go along further. She said that it really is chockfull of interesting facts and activities with shapes. Not anything that she didn’t already know and not any new activities that she hasn’t done at least once, but she has been teaching middle school math for 25 years. She recommended this as a gift for a new-ish math teacher or for those few, precious students who “geek-out” on math. And she made me promise to let her check it out after I catalog it for the school library.
