Stiefvater, Maggie Sinner, 368 p. $19. Scholastic Press, 2014. Language: R (100+ swears, 0 ‘f’); Violence: G; Mature Content: R (naked girls, implied sex).
Isabel and her mother have left Minnesota for L.A. Isabel spends her days in a funk, making her a perfect clothing model and salesperson for an upscale designer. Her life is dreadful, but livable, until Cole blows into town – he says he is there for Isabel, but she finds out he is cutting a record and starring in a reality series. The couple are drawn together like magnets, but every interaction tends to end in disaster. And Cole may be drug-free, but his need to lose himself in his wolf-form may be as destructive as any narcotics.
This new book about the Wolves of Mercy Falls is much more about Isabel and Cole as humans than anything do to with the wolf, though he makes an appearance. It reflects the shallowness and glitzy L.A. lifestyle with its shallow relationships and dependence upon looks. Stiefvater doesn’t create any easy answers, instead scattering questions behind the final act. High school students who want to continue the story will probably pick this up.
