Planet Kindergarten Illustrated by Shane Prigmore Chronicle Books, 2014. $16.99

A little
boy is preparing for kindergarten and kindergarten is compared to going into
space to another planet. He has all of
his supplies and the doctor’s okay, so his parents drive him to school where he
meets his crewmates (who seem like aliens from another planet). The mission commander is the teacher and they
do art projects, go to recess and have nap time. Then his mission is accomplished and his
parents come to get him.
The overall
idea is cute, but my little boy who is going into kindergarten didn’t
understand the connection between going to school and going to space. It’s a bit of a stretch to expect young
readers to understand the comparison.
There is a lot going on in the pictures which adds to the
confusion.
