Scott, Kieran, This is So Not
Happening. Simon and Schuster, 2012. Pgs. 315. Language: R (148 swears,
26 “f”s), Violence: PG-13, Sexual Content: PG-13
Last summer, Jake hooked up and
had sex once with Chloe. At the beginning of the book, Jake and Ally’s reunion
is ruined by Hammond, Chloe’s ex-boyfriend, punching Jake and announcing
Chloe’s pregnancy. Chloe claims Jake is the father despite Jake using a condom.
Soon, Jake is spending a lot of time helping Chloe with the pregnancy, adoption
process, and dealing with the parents and Ally is feeling left out. When she
discovers that Will Halloran, Chloe’s other summer hookup, might be the father
instead, Ally digs and discovers the truth. Overnight, Jake turns into a jerk
toward Chloe and Ally doesn’t like who he’s become. Are things over between her
and Jake or will the two of them be able to salvage their relationship?
The swearing gets old really fast
and Jake’s sudden change in attitude doesn’t seem to quite fit with the
character growth he seems to have experienced in the last book. The other
characters are likable, even Chloe, despite what she did. The plot is a little
shallow and hard to believe, at times, and Jake’s turnaround at the end isn’t
completely believable. Readers, however, who are interested in realistic
fiction that deals with teen pregnancy will enjoy reading this book. HS.
