Zinn, Bridget Poison. 288 pgs. Hyperion Books, March 12, 2013. $16.99. Language: PG (some mild swearing); Sexual Content: PG; Violence: PG.
Master potion-maker Kyra is on the run after trying to kill her best friend the princess with a poisoned dart and, for the first time ever, missing her target. But she hasn't given up yet. The kingdom is in danger, and the only way to save it is to kill the princess. This time she can't miss. The only advantages Kyra has are a pig, a pouch full of potions, and a handsome, perky farm boy who seems to pop up everywhere Kyra goes.
How refreshing to find a clean, feel-good fantasy with a bit of humor and romance, yet enough suspense to keep the pages turning! I also appreciated that Kyra is strong, independent, and very smart, while not being annoyingly perfect, and she and the boy she ends up with are well-matched. While Poison is a fun read for any age, mature high school readers may find it a bit young for them. The book is likely to find a wider audience with younger readers and die-hard fantasy fans.
