Kayla doesn’t quite fit in with
her mean girl friends. One day, she finds a hurt cat and returns it to the
local magic shop. Here she meets Matilda from school. Kayla’s friends return to
the shop on a quest to make their crushes fall for them. But, is Matilda what
she seems? Is the potion really a love potion?
The characters
are one-dimensional, shallow bullies, but the main character has redeeming
qualities. The plot is simple, but suitable for third graders. Readers who like
chick-lit will be left with mild chills and possibly rethinking about how they
