Chickenhare by Chris Grine –NOT RECOMMENDED

Grine, Chris Chickenhare 160 pgs. GRAPHIX, 2013. $8.72.  Content: Language: G (0 swears);  Mature Content: PG ;  Violence: PG13.
In this graphic novel Abe and Chickenhare are captured and sold to a taxidermist named Klaus. They hatch a plot with some fellow inmates and are soon on their merry way. But  Klaus and his flunkies follow soon after, add to the mix a ghostly goat and some wild natives.
Featuring adorable artwork, I was hard pressed to dislike this book, but I really didn't care for it. Especially not for elementary school. From a taxidermist who hold and pets dead creatures, on his lap, while referring to himself as Daddy, to a goat corpse with broken legs, to a drowning. I just felt sad and cold while reading this book. Middle school grades may enjoy the humor that is present at the start of the book, and it’s hard to overlook the cute illustrations, but there are plenty of better options are far as plot goes.
