Edwards, Michelle and Jana Christy Room for the Baby. 32 pgs. Random House Children's Books, 2012. $17.99. PICTURE BOOK.
This family of three has been living very comfortably in their tiny apartment, but when the mother becomes pregnant they need to find room for the new baby. The only choice: cleaning out the sewing room, which has accumulated years' worth of cast-off items. Rather than throwing all the stuff away, the thrifty family uses the bits of yarn and fabric, old clothes, and empty spools of thread to sew a layette, build a crib, and even make a toy or two for the baby, while still finding time to share plenty of the results with their neighbors. The various Jewish holidays mark the passing of time as the room empties and the mother's belly grows.
A nice approach to the topic of an impending younger sibling. The family's resourcefulness in reusing all of the cast-off items is refreshing in a culture in which so many things are thrown away, and it is good to see the family happy and willing to work together in creative ways to prepare for the baby.
