Desert 32 pgs.
Clarion Books, 2012. $15.29. (Rating: G)
The story of a
Saint, when he was just a boy. Growing up poor, and of mixed race (mulatto) –Martin
had to become a servant boy. But when others began to notice his gift with
animals and healing the poor –he was accepted into the Dominican Order and
called the Rose in the Desert.
I haven’t had
the opportunity to read many books about Saints or especially their childhoods,
but it seems smart to relate the story of a large figure, like a Saint, in this way. The
story of a childhood told to a child. If you need a biography of a Saint in
your school library, this one has a wonderful theme of overcoming a racial
barrier, cherishing animals and those who are underserved.
