The Big Something by Patricia Reilly Giff - OPTIONAL

Giff, Patricia Reilly  The Big Something  Illustrated by Dian Palmisciano  Orchard Books, 2012.  EARLY READER.  Content: G.

Jim and Jilli are playing in Jilli’s grandma’s backyard when they see something happening on the other side of the fence.  They see a woman with a witch hat on who is painting her house and decorating it to look like a Hansel and Gretel house.  The kids run inside to hide, but Jilli’s dog, Fiercely, has a different idea.  When Fiercely gets underneath the fence the kids decide they need to save him from the witch.  They dress up in costumes that they think will scare the witch and try to get Fiercely back.  What they find out is that the woman isn’t a witch, but a nice teacher that they will have for school the next year, and the house she is decorating is going to be their new school house.  This is a transitional reader, so it’s predictable but enjoyable.  My one issue is the kids pick gummy bears up off the floor of a shed, eat them and then offer them to the teacher, and she eats some too-gross.
