Webb, Sophie Far from Shore: Chronicles of an open ocean voyage, 80 pgs Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 2011. $13.49.
This book is the true story of Sophie Webb, a biologist and naturalist, as she journeys a section of the pacific ocean. She is on a voyage of discovery, along with other scientists, to research ocean related topics. While her main job is to count seabirds, she recounts stories about many species including whales and dolphins. Her story is jam packed with daily events, science, and her joy in the experience.
I think students will find the day to day life of a biologist doing research absolutely fascinating. Since the writer also illustrated, we see the entire experience from her perspective. There is a lot to learn and students will enjoy the voyage. There are many curriculum connections here.
Elementary - ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Stephanie MLS graduate.
