Hocus Pocus by Sylvie Desrosiers-ESSENTIAL

Desrosiers, Sylvie.  Simard, Remy.  Hocus Pocus, 32 pgs.  Kids Can Press, 2011.  $16.95.

Inside cover:  “Meet Hocus Pocus, a mischievous rabbit in a magician’s hat.  Likes: carrots.  Dislikes: sharp teeth.  There’s only one thing standing in the way of his heart’s desire… Meet Dog, the magician’s grumpy canine.  Likes: sleeping.  Dislikes: that rabbit who lives in the hat.  What results is a classic battle between brawn and brains, and big and little.  Will Hocus Pocus emerge victorious?  Find out in this comic adventure that will delight even the smallest reader.”

This is a fantastic wordless book.  The illustrations are not only inviting and vivid, they are so detailed that even the youngest of readers would be able to understand the storyline.  We loved the fact that the two characters traded victories and defeats throughout the book, and thoroughly enjoyed the ending.  We laughed hard, and enjoyed every second of this great book.

Pre-K.  EL(K-3).  ESSENTIAL.  Reviewer: SL.
