Numeroff, Laura. Evans, Nate. Munsinger, Lynn. Ponyella, 32 pgs. Hyperion Book CH, 2011. $16.99. Inside cover: “Poor Ponyella! She used to be the prettiest pony on her farm. But now a new owner has brought in two mean stepmares. They make Ponyella do all the chores, then laugh at her dirty coat and tangled mane. Ponlyella never gets to practice her jumping anymore! How can her dream of showing Princess Penelope her fabulous leaps at the Tippington 25th Annual Grand Royal Pony Championship ever come true? With a little help from her fairy godmare-poof! Ponyella’s coat becomes marshmallow white once again, and her mane silky and beautiful. Best of all, she has sparkling diamond horseshoes! At the Pony Championship, it’s love at first sight for Princess Penelope and Ponyella- but what will happen when the magic runs out at noon?” This is a great retelling of the classic Cinderealla fairy tale. We loved the illustrations, the suspense and the twist at the end! This could be used in a Language Arts unit comparing and contrasting this story with the original one. Although predictable, it was fun to hear the story from another point of view. Pre-K. EL (K-3). ADVISABLE. Reviewer: SL.
