McCartney, Jenny The Stone Bird, illustrated by Patrick
Benson. PICTURE BOOK. Andersen Press
(Lerner), 2018. $18. 9781541514553.
Eliza found a stone on the beach which she is sure is an
egg. After many days, she once wakes up
and the stone egg has become a stone bird.
More months go on and there appears a tinier stone egg and eventually a
tiny stone bird – until the day the birds fly away, leaving the little girl sad
and angry.
I’m still trying to figure out why this little story doesn’t
resonate with me. I think had the
feather at the end been made of stone, I might have liked it more, but the
girl’s strange anger and melancholy over the birds’ leaving is ugly and
jarring. While this might be a story of
discovery, loss, and healing, it doesn’t quite all hang together.
