Floaty by John Himmelman –OPTIONAL

Himmelman, John Floaty. PICTURE BOOK. Henry Holt (Macmillan), 2018. $18. 978125128058

This is the story of a grumpy old man named Mr. Raisin who only likes to sew. One day he receives an anonymous gift of a puppy –a puppy who floats. Mr. Raisin finds creative ways to take care of the dog and finds himself growing to love it. One day “Floatys” leash breaks and he floats off into the sky –will the pair be reunited.

I was SO excited to see a picture book by the author of the Bunjitzu Bunny Books! I feel sort of hum drum about this book. I think young readers will have a challenging time relating to the old man and his grumpiness about getting a puppy (most of them would be thrilled!). I keep finding books with this stereotypical grumpy lonely old man theme -which I find strange (Like the movie UP). Students will enjoy coming up with creative ways to care for such a puppy though. The illustrations were wonderful; big and bright, and easy to share with a large group.
