This is the true story of famous artist Ernie Barnes. His
life starts in the segregated south, where he develops a love of art and a wish
to see African American artists in galleries. But because of his height, he
fell into football, and eventually made that his career. Ernie never forgot his
artwork though, and when the time was right he found success as a sports artist
and more. Filled with large creative illustrations.
I like this story on so many levels; Ernie was is successful
and famous African American role model, he is an inspirational and incredibly
talented artist, and he can show young people that you can like art and like
sports at the same time. The artwork is just incredibly –both by the illustrator
Bryan Collier and by Ernie Barnes himself. I’m going to be showing this book to
our art teacher right away.
