Winter, Jonah Ruth
Bader Ginsberg: The case of R.B.G vs Inequality PICTURE BOOK/NON-FICTION. Abrams Books
for Young Readers (Abrams), 2017. $20. 978-1419725593
This
book details the life of Ruth Bader Ginsberg as if it was a court case and we
the reader were the judges. It takes the reader through the injustices she
experienced at every age because she was a woman and Jewish and wanted an
education and career. It also details the positions she was able to ascend to. Watery
and dark illustrations accompany.
Unfortunately I am comparing this book to the amazing picture book already out called: I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg makes her Mark by Debbie Levy -and this newer book is just not up to par. The illustrations are far superior in I Dissent –especially for engaging younger readers. This book features text that has a very hostile quality to it, which I think would put off readers/listeners that were boys, who would eventually just tune out on how awful men were. Because no matter how you spin it Ginsberg’s life is inspirational, I would rate this as optional.
