John and Sue are disappointed when the go to
the zoo and it is closed because the animals are ill. The zookeeper explains how all the different
animals are sick and tells the kids to return when they are better. The zookeeper sends the kids a letter the
next day to tell them that the animals are better, but now the kids are
sick. So the animals all march into John
and Sue’s house to visit them.
The book
is told in rhyme and is fun for a read aloud, but the content is so sad and
depressing—a bunch of sick animals, that the overall read is a downer. The illustrations are adorable but the book
just has a sad feel to it.
