Kugler, Tina and Carson
In Mary’s Garden, pgs. 30. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company,
2015. $16.99 G – PICTURE BOOK.
This is a delightful book with fabulous and quirky
illustrations. It’s about Wisconsin
artist Mary Nohl (1914 – 2001) who created fantastical sculptures and all sorts
of curious art in her garden and home.
It tells of Mary’s childhood, how she had different interests
and how she LOVED ART. It’s a wonderful
story of how she got ideas and was inspired to create. The last page of the book gives a short
biography including pictures of Mary, her home and creations. This would be a great book to talk about
subjects such as: artistic creation; being different and what to do about it;
being true to yourself; outsider art.
