Morrison, Megan Grounded: The Adventures of Rapunzel, 384 p.
Levine (Scholastic), 2015. $18. Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG
(not graphic)
The Witch has given Rapunzel a beautiful life in her
isolated, tall tower, including books that tell stories all about what happens when strangers are
allowed inside the tower. Then comes a
boy named Jack and an injured fairy queen, and suddenly Rapunzel decides for
herself to come down. Now, if she wants
to save Witch, Rapunzel must take on an epic journey, with only Jack’s
help. Once the eyes of an innocent have
been opened, can love still conquer all?
Grounded is perfect for upper elementary and middle school
readers. Rapunzel’s story is so
familiar, and yet Morrison still manages to bring new depths to the tale. I wonder if she will take her hand to other
classics.
