Rosner, Jennifer The Mitten String, illustrated by Kristina Swarner. PICTURE BOOK. Random House, 2014. $17.99. Content: G.
Ruthie's family makes handmade mittens to sell to their village, using wool sheared from their very own sheep. But when they meet a deaf woman with a baby, Ruthie learns a little something about living with a disability, and also improves her own approach to making mittens. Includes a short glossary, sign language guide to knitting terms, and author's note about the inspiration for the story.
This is a nice story, but not particularly memorable. While the illustrations are pretty, they are also a bit washed-out and therefore less eye-catching than they could be. This may, however, work well as a companion to a classroom lesson.
