When Cuckoo is
born, all seems well until his family chirps a beautiful, “Too-too-weet!” and
Cuckoo can only answer, “Cuckoo!” Unable to communicate Cuckoo strikes out on
his own to find someone who can understand him. He travels far and wide and
does his best to learn the languages he hears, but despite his best efforts he
cannot be understood. Then one day he finds the one who can finally give an
answer to his call.
This is a perfect
read aloud book with many fun animal sounds to amuse young readers. The
illustrations are clean and simple and utterly charming. The themes of finding
where you belong and accepting your uniqueness instead of trying to change
provide teachable moments for many ages.
