Mad Dogs by Robert Muchamore - ESSENTIAL

Muchamore, Robert Mad Dogs (CHERUBS #8), 396 p. Simon Pulse, 2007, 2014.  $18.  Violence: PG; Language: PG (mostly British swears); Mature Content: PG-13 (characters are getting older and a bit mature without being too graphic).

James is headed straight into a turf war between two rival gangs in England.  In order to stave off massive violence, the police need info, which means that James has to become a hardcore gang member —fast!  And if his cover is blown, no one will be coming to save him.

This has been my go-to series for reluctant boy readers since they first appeared in the early 2000’s.  I actually paid a friend to bring copies back from England because I couldn’t get the entire series in the US.  It is great to have Simon and Schuster putting out hardcover copies, I just wish they were up to date.  There are actually 12 books in this series, 3 in a follow up series and 7 in the WWII prequel.  Once a student gets started, they will not stop until they have read every book you have.  Perfect for middle school reluctant readers.  And they love talking about them too.
