Rubin, Susan Goodman Jean Laffite: The Pirate Who Saved
America, illustrated by Jeff Himmelman.
Abrams, 2012. $19. PICTURE BOOK.
EL, MS – ADVISABLE.
Jean Lafitte and his band of pirtes played a special part in the War of 1812, when they defended New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi river from the British, who were determined to recapture the Americas.
A straight-forward, honest look at the life of a pirate/privateer who helped save a country that originally didn’t want him. If your school touches on pirates or the War of 1812, this would be a great addition – don’t forget that even older students enjoy books with pictures!
