How it Feels to Be a Boat by James Kwan -- ADVISABLE

Kwan, James How it Feels to Be a Boat. PICTURE BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017. $16.99. Content: G.

The reader is asked to pretend to be a boat -- to picture how it feels to have barnacles tickling their bottoms and to have people living and laughing and loving in their bellies. And, most of all, they are asked to imagine how it feels when those people fight over the wheel, and when that fighting leads to catastrophe. Can a boat survive such tumult and keep on chugging?

This book feels like a metaphor for life's journey. Sometimes the way is smooth, and the goal is obvious, and people get along, and everyone is happy. But sometimes internal battles lead to trouble.

Because of its message, this book has a special depth to it, a bit more darkness and worry. But, if read and discussed with an adult, it would lead the way to great discussions about overcoming obstacles on the path of life. The illustrations are intricate and full of heart, and they complement the text perfectly.
